What it is, When it is, and What it means.
As the days grow shorter and the nights longer, the air turns colder, nature withdraws into restful slumber, and the world seems to slow down, we have entered the enchanting realm of the dark of the year. It is a period of introspection, where we retreat indoors and within ourselves. In many cultures, this season is celebrated with various festivals and traditions that honor the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.
When the Dark Half of the Year Begins:
The first day of autumn, the autumnal equinox - or Mabon - around September 21st, is the first day of the dark half of the year. This is the sunset of the year, it is a time of balance, of (nearly) equal light and dark - but after this time, the nights will be longer than the days. The wheel of the year turns back to the light half of the year on the spring equinox - or Ostara - around March 19.
Symbolism and Significance:
The darkness of this time is not to be feared but rather embraced. It represents a time of rest, renewal, and transformation. Just as seeds lie dormant in the earth, waiting for the warmth of spring to sprout, we too can use this period to nurture our dreams and aspirations, allowing them to take root within us.
Creativity and Inspiration:
The dark half of the year provides a fertile ground for creativity and inspiration. The long nights invite us to explore our inner landscapes, delve into the depths of our imagination, and engage in activities that nourish our souls. Whether writing, painting or simply curling up with a good book, this season offers a unique opportunity to tap into our creative potential.
Connecting with Nature:
During this time, nature reveals its raw beauty, with frost-kissed landscapes and starry skies. It is a perfect occasion to connect with the natural world around us. Taking walks in the crisp air, observing the stillness of the winter landscape, or even engaging in winter sports can help us feel more attuned to the rhythm of the seasons and find solace in the tranquility of the dark half of the year.
Self-Care and Reflection:
The dark half of the year invites us to slow down, take care of ourselves, and nourish our bodies and minds. It is a time to practice self-care rituals, such as warm baths, journaling, cozy evenings by the fire, indulging in comforting foods, and spending time with those you love. This period also encourages us to reflect on personal growth, set intentions for the coming year, and let go of what no longer serves us.
As we embrace the dark half of the year, we open ourselves to the beauty and magic within its depths and within ourselves. It is a time of introspection, creativity, and renewal—a season that invites us to reconnect with ourselves, nature, and the cycles of life. So, welcome the darkness with open arms, for within it lies the potential for growth, transformation, and a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
